Nanny payroll service vs. an hours tracker

By Paypr · Updated September 8, 2026

An hours tracker records work, rates and payments. Payroll tools can help calculate deductions and prepare or submit required documents. Some payroll providers also include time tracking, so check what you already have before adding another app.

Start with the records you need

If your everyday question is “what do I still owe?”, Paypr keeps a running balance from hours entered and payments recorded. If you need tax calculations, document preparation, filing or transfers, choose tools or professional help that explicitly cover those tasks. Paypr does not perform them.

One threshold does not decide every obligation

For 2026, the IRS generally applies Social Security and Medicare taxes when cash wages to one household employee reach $3,000, subject to exceptions. Federal unemployment has a separate test: $1,000 in total household cash wages in any calendar quarter of 2025 or 2026. State requirements can differ.

Classification depends on the working relationship, including control over how work is done. A job title, part-time schedule or number of clients is not enough by itself to settle classification. Review IRS Publication 926 and your state requirements.

When to consider payroll help

You can handle required filings yourself or use a provider. Buying a payroll service is not itself a legal requirement. When comparing providers, check whether they merely prepare forms or submit them, which jurisdictions they support, and any fees for transfers or year-end work.

NannyKeeper also offers time tracking, so a separate tracker is not automatically needed. See our Paypr and NannyKeeper comparison for the difference between personal records and a shared web workflow.

Using Paypr alongside your chosen process

  1. Log actual hours at the agreed rate.
  2. Check any overtime or other adjustments separately before calculating final pay.
  3. Complete required payroll tasks through your chosen process.
  4. Record payments in Paypr and reconcile the remaining balance with your records.

Paypr’s balance reflects the entries and payments you record. It does not automatically reconcile taxes, payroll deductions or a provider’s net-pay amount.

When simple record-keeping may be enough for the app task

You may only need a personal log to follow payments to a helper or client. That describes the app task; it does not establish that no reporting or employment obligations exist. Keep the decision about those obligations separate.
